Brutu K.G. St Anthony’s K.G.
Brutu is about 5kms from Nandom Town in the extreme north of the Upper West region of Ghana.
The people are peasant farmers and mostly illiterate. They use locally manufactured farming implements to cultivate rice, maize, beans, yams and groundnuts. The harvest of these depends on the rainfall. The people are hardworking and committed to the education of their wards.
In 1990 they built a six classroom block made of mud bricks through communal labour for the primary school children. They then put up a shed for the kindergarten. The District Education Office recognised this effort of commitment and processed the papers for the school to be absorbed by the Government. The Government in appreciation built a six classroom block for the Primary School in 2003. The K.G. students then moved out of the shed into the mud house.
Purpose of the Kindergarten.
The kindergarten does the following:-
Play Materials
The children at the K.G. house have no play materials except some old bicycle wheels and hoops which they run after during break.
Furniture
Pupils sit on the floor.
Feeding
Children are fed through the contribution of various kinds of foodstuff by their parents. A woman is employed to cook for the children. This woman is remunerated monthly by contributions from parents. However, during the lean season – June to August every year, feeding stops in the school until harvest in November and December
Some children drop out of school due to hunger.
